Homes for Sale in Phelps

The village of Phelps was organized around 1793, the town then becoming around 1796. The two were incorporated in 1855. Phelps got its name from a land inspector from Massachusetts name Oliver Phelps whom later became the first judge of Ontario County. Oliver Phelps helped orchestrate the massive Phelps & Gorham Purchase of 1788, which created what we now call, Western New York.

Historically, Phelps has had its identity tied to sauerkraut. Being an agricultural town, you can find fields filled with cabbage, corn, and soybeans. Phelps is known for their sauerkraut festival held every summer. The festivities include a parade recognizing the communities groups and businesses. The weekend also includes cabbage bowling, sauerkraut eating contest, carnival rides and many food vendors. Now Phelps is not just known for their sauerkraut crop. The Flint Creek and the Canandaigua Outlet are two main waterways that run the town and village. Phelps was known to be a mill town, but dairy farming now dominates the flat lands and subtle hills. The DeBoover Family Farms, LLC was established in 1920 and has continued to flourish since. Phelps Cement Products is also a well known business that produces concrete masonry units and building products since 1946. Additional businesses within the community are pedestrian friendly; Water Side Wine Bar is a former mill converted to a classy bar that serves wine, beer, and gourmet food with a view of the Flint Creek waterfalls. A stone throw away will bring you to Crafty Ales & Lagers; a nano-brewery located in one of Phelps oldest stone buildings. New to the map, Smokin’ Tails Distillery, also located within the main part of town, is home of the 2019 Masters Distillers winner, Peter Cheney. The 2018 census estimates the current population of Phelps is 1,737. Phelps measures 65.3 square miles. The median property value is $110,000.
